Outside of the sunny skies of California, there likely hasnât been a place in America thatâs drawn the attention of television and movie producers the way that the Sunshine State has over the years, with countless shows set in the state of Florida.
Whether it be the classic TV hit âThe Golden Girls,â which was set in Miami and more modern hits like Apple TVâs âPalm Royaleâ (set in Palm Beach), Netflix's hit show âBloodlineâ (set in Islamorada) and the ABC sitcom âCougar Townâ (set in Gulfhaven), Floridaâs favorite locally set show runs the gamut, history wise, illustrating the stateâs longstanding connection with the little screen.
World Television Day is November 21. To celebrate, FloridaBet.com took a beat from Florida sports betting to find the best shows set in the state. We used IMDB ratings, Rotten Tomatoes Audience score, Rotten Tomatoes Critic score, and awards recognition to create a weighted scoring system.
Rank | Show | Total Points |
1 | The Golden Girls | 146 |
2 | Palm Royale | 56 |
3 | Bloodline | 44 |
4 | Cougar Town | 42 |
5 | I Dream Of Jeannie | 31 |
6 | The Finder | 23 |
7 | Shaqâs Big Challenge | 21 |
8 | American Horror Story: Freak Show | 20 |
9 | Itâs Florida, Man | 13 |
10 | Wayne | 12 |
Scoring a total of 146 points, the classic TV show âThe Golden Girlsâ finished atop Floridaâs favorite show list, with 146 points to nearly triple the next closest contender, which was âPalm Royaleâ with 56 points in total.
Throw in âBloodlineâ (44 points), âCougar Townâ (42 points) and âI Dream Of Jeannieâ (31 points) and you have the upper end of the Florida TV shows list, while âThe Finderâ (23 points), âShaqâs Big Challengeâ (21 points), âAmerican Horror Story: Freak Showâ (20 points), âItâs Florida, Manâ (13 points) and âWayneâ (12 points) rounded out the top 10 for the Sunshine State.
At the end of the day, none of the 10 held nearly the level of zeitgeist sway that NBCâs 180-episode sitcom has, despite the fact that âThe Golden Girlsâ went off the air in 1992, more than three decades before most of the rest of the list made it onto the screen in the first place.
