Next Jacksonville Jaguars Head Coach: Top Candidates If Jags Move On From Pederson

Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

  • The Doug Pederson era in Jacksonville is likely over in the coming weeks.
  • Where will Jaguars owner Shahid Khan turn next?
  • Candidates could include Bill Belichick and Mike Vrabel.

It’s been three years since Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan axed the team’s head coach, which means it’s likely high time for some turnover on the AFC South stalwart’s sidelines, given the team’s woeful 2-10 start to the season.

Should such an outcome come true, that would mean that third-year head coach Doug Pederson would join such luminaries as Urban Meyer, Doug Marrone, Gus Bradley and Mike Mularkey in getting fired by Khan since the Pakistani billionaire bought the club in 2012.

With all that in mind, FloridaBet.com - the top source for Florida sports betting news - broke down some hypothetical odds on which NFL candidates could be the next up in North Florida, with a handful of assistants and former head coaches leading the way right now in the race to replace Pederson in Jacksonville.

Who Replaces Doug Pederson in Jacksonville?

Our odds-on favorites to be the next head coach of the Jags are second year Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken and Detroit Lions DC Aaron Glenn, who both check in at +600 - ahead of Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson and former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who are both listed at +800.

Monken has only been a head coach once in his esteemed coaching career, that being his three-year stint at Southern Miss of the FBS, where he went 13-25 in total, though he did win the Conference-USA Coach of the Year award in 2015. He's found his NFL stride with Lamar Jackson, and has utilized star running back Derrick Henry alongside him this year to give the Ravens a real shot at a Super Bowl title. Expect Monken to again be in demand after he went through several head coach interviews last offseason.

Glenn and Johnson are both up-and-coming coordinators of the league’s hottest team in the Lions, with 11-1 Detroit topping most sportsbooks' boards as Super Bowl favorites through 13 weeks. Each will have plenty of interview requests as soon as teams are allowed to check in on other team's coordinators.

Belichick, meanwhile, is third all-time on the NFL’s wins list with 302 victories (to 165 losses) with the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots, while his former defensive protégé (Mike Vrabel) is listed alongside Washington Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury as the next closest contenders to land the Jaguars job, with both men listed at +1000.

Belichick will likely want full personnel control with the six Super Bowl titles as a head coach in New England. Keep an eye on Jaguars GM Trent Baalke's status in the coming weeks to gauge whether Khan will pursue The Hoodie.

Among the longshots to keep in mind when it comes to the Jaguars head coaching job are Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman and Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, with both listed at +1100 to replace Pederson in North Florida.
