Will FSU Fire Mike Norvell?: Odds On If Norvell Will Be Fired This Season

The Florida State Seminoles joined an ignominious list on Labor Day, becoming the fourth team ranked inside the preseason AP top 25 to start the year 0-2 in the last 10 years, thanks to a 28-13 loss to Boston College at Doak Campbell Stadium.

The defeat in Tallahassee marked the first time since 2021 that FSU lost its first two regular season contests, which is nothing reassuring for head coach Mike Norvell and company, given the fact that the Seminoles finished that year with a 5-7 record.

After a brutal 0-2 start to the season, Florida State fans are calling for Norvell to be fired. At FloridaBet.com - home to all updates on the future of Florida sports betting - we developed exclusive odds to see if he will be relieved of his duties during the season.

Will Mike Norvell Survive 2024 Season?

It wasn’t long ago that Norvell was a top suitor to replace Nick Saban at Alabama, with the CFB veteran at one point being considered a favorite to do so before the Crimson Tide chose former Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer for the job.

Now, Norvell is staring down the barrel of an awkward moment, with the fifth-year coach at FSU being owed $6 million if he’s canned in 2024, which is a bargain compared to fellow Sunshine State hot-seater Billy Napier at Florida, whose number is nearly five times that much.

Still, two bad games don’t make (or break) a season, especially given the current 12-team CFP that takes effect in 2024, which is why we believe that FSU will opt to keep Norvell for the 2025 campaign.

That’s why we give FSU -150 odds of keeping Norvell next year, compared with +200 odds that he’s canned before then, speaking to the rational idea of giving a coach more than two games to try and figure things out, especially after the school’s 13-1 run last season.

For now, Norvell and the Seminoles have to turn their collective attention towards his old team, as FSU hosts the Memphis Tigers on Sept. 14 at noon Eastern time in the second of three straight home games for the Seminoles.

While no odds are available for that Week 4 clash right now, we do know that oddsmakers from DraftKings Sportsbook aren’t buying what Norvell’s selling, with FSU listed at +3000 to win the ACC in 2024, ranking eighth out of 17 teams in the expanded conference, speaking to how far the Seminoles have fallen of late under their longtime head coach.
