What’s Next For Mike Evans?: Buccaneers WR’s Next Steps After Setting Record

Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

One of the most consistent wide receivers in today’s NFL landscape achieved a feat more than a decade in the making on Sunday, tying legendary wideout Jerry Rice’s record for the most consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to start a career in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 27-19 win over the New Orleans Saints.

Mike Evans got to the number by the skin of his teeth, thanks to hauling in nine catches for 89 yards in the team’s eight-point win at home in the final regular season game of the season, finishing the year with 1,004 yards on 74 catches with 11 touchdowns in 14 games played for the 10-7 Buccaneers.

The former Texas A&M star has been a one-man tour de force out wide for Tampa Bay since the club drafted him seventh overall in 2014, with 836 catches, 12,684 yards and 105 touchdowns during his 168-game career.

Now, Evans and the Bucs’ are tasked with defending their home turf against the Washington Commanders in the NFC Wild Card Round on Sunday, with bet365 giving the NFC South squad -180 moneyline odds of advancing to the NFC Divisional Round, with Tampa Bay listed as a three-point favorite right now.

For now, we at FloridaBet.com took a beat from traditional Florida sports betting and researched how long Evans can keep his 1,000-yard season streak alive, which is why we came up with some hypothetical odds on the future Hall of Fame wideout’s odds of passing Rice and reaching Canton once his playing days are done.

Right now, we’re not going against Evans to pass Rice on the NFL’s all-time 1,000-yard seasons list, which is why we give the Tampa Bay veteran -375 odds of posting a record-breaking 12th season in a row with that many yards.

Overall, the odds that Evans falls short of 1,000 receiving yards in 2025 are +375, giving the former Aggies superstar a 78.9% chance of breaking Rice’s NFL record for consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to start a professional career.

Evans is currently 24th on the NFL’s all-time receiving yardage leaderboard, with 12,684 yards, ranking behind Art Monk (12,721 yards) and 3,250 yards shy of Terrell Owens, who is third all-time with 15,934 receiving yards.

So far, Evans has averaged just over 1,153 yards per season, which means he’d have to hit that mark three years in a row to pass Owens on the league’s all-time yardage list, which should be doable given how he’s hauled in that many yards five times in 11 seasons.

That’s why we’re giving him -550 odds (or 84.6%) of finishing in the NFL’s top three, receiving yardage wise, compared with +550 odds that Evans falls short of Owens’ career yardage total by the time he hangs up his cleats in the future.

Given Evans’ impeccable career stats so far and his five Pro Bowl appearances, we’re going with him as a surefire Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee when he retires, with -2000 (or 95.2%) odds of him reaching Canton at some point in the future.

Compare that with +2000 (or 4.8%) odds that Evans never is enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and you have a pretty good picture of the type of career the 31-year-old Texan has achieved so far.

For now, Evans will look to lead Tampa Bay past Washington in the NFC Wild Card Round, with a potential clash against either the Los Angeles Rams or Minnesota Vikings awaiting them in the NFC Divisional Round should they defeat the Commanders on Sunday.
